6 Tips for Using & Storing DEF During Cold Winters

Cold winter temperatures can create challenges when using and storing Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). Taking a few proactive steps can help keep your equipment running smoothly and prevent unnecessary downtime during the winter months.

1. Know DEF’s Freezing Point

DEF begins to freeze at approximately 12°F (-11°C). When temperatures approach or drop below this level, freezing can impact machine operation. Most modern heavy equipment is equipped with DEF tank heaters to prevent freezing while the machine is running. If your equipment does not include these features, be sure to allow additional warm-up time and monitor performance closely before operation.

2. Store DEF Properly

For best results, store DEF between 12°F (-11°C) and 86°F (30°C). If DEF freezes in storage or inside a machine tank, it can safely be thawed without losing effectiveness. Always allow DEF to thaw naturally—never apply direct heat or add chemicals or additives.

3. Allow for Expansion in Tanks

DEF expands as it freezes. During winter months, avoid filling DEF tanks completely, especially if equipment is stored outdoors overnight. Leaving some space in the tank can help prevent cracking or damage. If DEF does freeze in the tank, let it thaw naturally before use.

4. Check DEF Quality

Cold temperatures and improper storage can shorten DEF’s lifespan. Periodically inspect DEF for clarity. DEF that turns cloudy or milky white may contain urea crystals caused by freezing. Once warmed, properly stored DEF should return to a clear or slightly blue appearance. If discoloration remains, it may indicate contamination or degraded quality that could affect the SCR system.

5. Use Proper Handling and Dispensing Equipment

In cold conditions, insulated DEF dispensing systems can help keep fluid flowing and reduce the risk of line blockages. This is especially helpful for on-site refueling. Newer Volvo machines also feature improved DEF sight gauges and splash guards to help prevent accidental misfueling and contamination.

6. Park Smart When Possible

When equipment is not in use, parking in a heated or sheltered area can help keep DEF and machine components ready for operation. This can reduce startup delays and minimize issues related to freezing temperatures.

Winter performance matters. Volvo Construction Equipment machines are engineered with cold-weather operation in mind, including DEF system features designed to minimize freezing and downtime. Pairing the right equipment with proper DEF handling can make all the difference this winter.
