Winter Breakdowns Are Preventable: The Maintenance Mindset That Keeps Trucks Moving

Winter is one of the most demanding seasons for heavy-duty trucks. Cold weather puts more strain on equipment than any other time of year, and many of the breakdowns fleets experience are completely preventable with the right preparation and maintenance mindset.

At Nuss Truck & Equipment, our service teams see the same issues every winter. Frozen air systems, weak batteries, failing block heaters, and incorrect coolant freeze points are among the most common causes of winter downtime. The good news is most of these failures can be avoided with simple, consistent maintenance habits.

In a recent Power Play podcast episode, Nuss service advisor Joe Bloomquist shared practical, real-world tips that help fleets and drivers avoid winter failures before they happen.

The Most Common Preventable Winter Failure: Air System Freeze-Up

Air system moisture is one of the biggest causes of winter breakdowns. When moisture builds up in air tanks and lines, freezing temperatures can create ice blockages that disable braking and air systems.

Daily air tank draining and proper air dryer service before winter can dramatically reduce failure risk.

Tires, Air Pressure, and Visibility Matter More in Winter

Traction and safety start with tires. Maintaining proper tread depth and monitoring air pressure daily helps prevent slipping and uneven wear in winter conditions.

Drivers should also ensure:

  • Wiper blades are in good condition
  • Washer fluid is rated for winter temperatures
  • HVAC filters are clean for proper airflow

The Two Most Critical Winter Components: Block Heater and Batteries

If fleets focus on only two things, they should focus on block heaters and battery health.

Block heaters ensure engines stay warm enough to start in extreme temperatures, while batteries must be fully charged and inspected for physical damage or freezing risk.

Frozen or damaged batteries should never be jump-started due to explosion risk.

Coolant Freeze Protection Is Often Overlooked

Coolant freeze protection must be tested regularly. Even small amounts of added water can change freeze protection and lead to engine damage if coolant freezes inside the engine block.

Simple test strips can verify coolant freeze point quickly.

Fuel, DEF, and Idle Strategy for Extreme Cold

When temperatures drop below freezing:

  • Keep fuel tanks full to prevent condensation
  • Use proper winter fuel blends
  • Follow fuel treatment directions carefully (more is not better)
  • Run trucks periodically if parked in extreme cold to keep DEF systems operational

The Biggest Winter Maintenance Mindset Shift Fleets Should Make

Preventive winter maintenance is not optional. The cost of avoidable breakdowns, towing, lost load time, and shop wait time far exceeds the cost of routine preparation.
